THE TOWERS FAMILY SAGA
        EPISODE 31
The morning sun hit the
marble steps of the federal
building with the cold
precision of a laser. Robert
stood at the base of the
staircase, looking up at
the massive bronze doors
that represented the end of
his public life. He reached
up to adjust his silk tie,
a habit from a thousand
board meetings, but his
hands were steady. Behind
him, a wall of cameras and
reporters surged forward,
their microphones held out
like weapons. "Robert!
Did you authorize the
Arizona burial?" "Is it
true the family is
bankrupt, Robert?" The
noise was a physical
weight, but he didn't
flinch. He kept his eyes
locked on Virginia, who
stood one step above him,
her hand extended like a
lifeline. She looked regal
even in the face of the
scandal, a woman who had
traded her jewels for a
different kind of value.
"Are you ready for this?"
she whispered as he
reached her side. Robert
looked back at the city
skyline one last time?at
the towers that bore his
name and the empire that
had defined him. He
realized that the radical
honesty pact had stripped
away the paint, but the
canvas underneath was
stronger than he ever
imagined. "I?ve spent my
whole life rehearsing for
a part I didn't want to
play," he said, his voice
carrying over the din of
the press. "For the first
time today, I don't have
to remember any more lies.
I don't have to protect a
ghost." They turned
together and walked toward
the doors. The flashbulbs
popped like miniature
explosions, capturing the
moment the Towers family
stopped being a headline
and started becoming a
reality. As the heavy
doors groaned shut behind
them, the roar of the crowd
vanished, replaced by the
sterile, echoing silence
of the hall of justice.
