THE TOWERS FAMILY SAGA
EPISODE 19
The first night after the
sign went up, the estate
felt hollow to Robert.
The hallways, once full of
corporate strategy, were
now just empty spaces.
He spent the evening
labeling boxes, a task he
used to delegate to a
fleet of assistants.
Meanwhile, Shirley sat on
her porch, scrubbing the
last of the charcoal from
under her fingernails.
The art program had left
her tired but oddly awake.
She called Minnie, not to
complain, but to ask for
a pancake recipe.
"The fancy stuff doesn't
stick to the ribs," she
admitted over the static.
In their apartment, James
and Virginia sat on the
floor with the 'New Family
Rule' notebook.
They wrote down 'Rule One:
No more hiding overtime'.
James looked at the room
and realized he didn't
miss the perks of his old
firm at all. The
radical honesty was a
heavy coat, but it kept
them warmer than the
cushioned lies ever had.
At the estate, Minnie helped
Robert sort the library.
They found a photo from
1975, buried in a ledger
of secrets. "We should
keep this," she said,
tucking it into the
single box Robert planned
to take to his condo.
The city news was still
buzzing about the "End of
an Era," but inside the
house, it was just the
sound of packing tape.
Robert looked at the sign
through the window.
It wasn't a loss; it was
an exit strategy for his
soul. He thought about the
cactus he had bought for
James, sitting ready for
a new desk. The empire was
in boxes, but the family
was finally breathing.
As the moon rose over the
lawn, the Towers prepared
for the dawn of a life
that was smaller, louder,
and true.
