       Episode 104
      THE DIAGNOSIS
"Thirty-five days," he said.
"We start on Monday now."
"The risk is fading."
Minnie gasped in relief.
Robert stood very firm.
"Do what you must do."
"Save her," he demanded.
The doctor nodded fast.
He turned back to work.
The family sat in silence.
The pressure was great.
Robert looked at his girls.
"Stay calm," he ordered.
"We are still together."
Barbara grabbed his hand.
"She is so young, Dad."
"I know," he replied.
"But she has the heart
of a lioness, Barbara."
"She will be healthy."
Shirley checked her watch.
"It is four in the morn."
"The dawn is almost here."
"We stay until the end."
Robert looked at the hall.
A nurse came to the door.
"She is awake now."
The words were a balm.
Robert exhaled, shaking.
"Can we see her, please?"
"One at a time, yes."
Robert went in first.
He held her warm hand.
"You are doing great."
She looked at him well.
She kept her hair still.
The Towers held on.
"I feel strong, Dad."
"I have the pills now."
"I have my family too."
"You have us forever,"
Robert said to his girl.
"The radiation is next,"
Minnie said with a nod.
"That is the medicine."
Dorothy sat by the door.
"I brought her flowers."
"She will love them,"
Shirley said with a grin.
The tension finally broke.
The air felt lighter now.
"We have a lot to do,"
Robert noted to them all.
"We have a forge to run."
"Forget the forge, Dad,"
Barbara said to him now.
"We have a life to save."
"She is saved," he said.
"The surgery was the win."
"Now we help her heal."
They gathered round her.
"Virginia?" Barbara asked.
"Can you hear me, sis?"
A small finger twitched.
"She is responding!"
Dorothy cried with joy.
"She is coming back!"
Robert wiped his eyes.
"The Towers are back."
"We beat the odds again."
"We always do," Minnie
said, taking his hand.
"The forge can wait."
"But our love cannot."
They watched her breathe.
The monitor pulsed on.
The morning light broke.
"She is a Towers girl,"
Robert said to the dawn.
"She has our bloodline."
"She is coming back home."
